Department Profile Physics

Year of establishment: B.Sc.(Gen)-1966, B.Sc.(Hons.)-1985

About The department

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.” ______ Albert Einstein. The Dinhata College has given the opportunity to the students of Cooch Behar and its surrounding district to realize and understand such marvelous structure of reality and intricate laws of nature by establishing the Department of Physics in 1966 and offering bachelor degree in Physics (General) course…

The department has evolved over the years and continued its journey by incepting the honors course in 1985 which is serving as the pursuit of deciphering the laws of nature and sowing seeds of curiosity among the young minds. At present the department has 5 commendable teaching members and three support staff. Three departmental laboratories are moderately equipped to support the students’ academic quest and a classroom with an integrated teaching learning system serves the best interest of our students. The department of physics not only nurtures its students to achieve greater heights of academic excellence but also guides them to grow as well-rounded individuals. The formation of the Physics Society has furthered the involvement of our students in organizing events and activities which foster a sense of curiosity among them. The Department of Physics has come a long way since its inception and looks forward to holistic development of the students who shall proudly participate in nation building.

Why To Choose The Department Of Physics, Dinhata College

  • There is plethora of reasons to study physics, among which few noteworthy reasons are as follows,
  • Physics helps one to understand the world around and clear the curiosity.
  • Develop skills that will be helpful in developing critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Studying physics offers pursuing versatile career as nuclear physicist, material scientist, bio-physicist, medical physicist, data scientist etc. in different government, and private sectors.

Dept. of Physics at Dinhata College has carried its legacy for decades to serve the best to its students by helping them rendering knowledge to build a strong foundation to pursue higher studies in physics or interdisciplinary areas related to physics or other careers. The present faculty members of the department continuing do so and engaged in enriching the departmental resources which enables us to deliver effective teaching learning to our students. The examples of such legacy of the departments are reflected in its distinguished alumni who are doing their best in various national institute of eminence. Moreover, the friendly bonding between teacher and students maintained at department ease the fear of the students and helps them interact freely with the teachers. Moderately equipped laboratory and ICT enabled classroom, and qualified teachers made the department a well-organized platform to learn physics for the rural students, especially financially backward students of the area.

SWOC Analysis Of The Depart And Future Plans

Strength: Student-teacher relation has always been the strength of our department. Students are always encouraged to ask any question however unreasonable it may be and teachers always try to give an agreeable answer to it. Also dedicated Faculty members, non-Teaching Staffs, moderately equipped laboratories, intelligent and hard-working students are the strengths of the department.
Weakness: With the growing number of students, we cannot give equal attention to all of them with our insufficient faculty. Also, infrastructure of laboratories, shortage of space for classrooms are the main weaknesses of our dept.
Opportunities: Students passing with Physics Honours go for higher studies in NITs, IIT Guwahati, N.B.U., Assam University, Silchar, Jadavpur University and other state Universities. Few students have also joined different Research Centers, School Service and other services.
Challenges: There is limited scope for innovation in curriculum design as the syllabus prescribed by the university is strictly followed. However, topics related to frontier areas of research are discussed through internal seminars and invited talks. This intention is threatened due to constraints of time and space. Non flexibility of curriculum is also a challenge.
