The Department of Geography at Dinhata College, established in 2010, stands as a beacon of academic excellence in Geographic education. The department is dedicated to its students’ diverse interests and aspirations by offering a comprehensive range of subjects, including Geography (Honors), GIS and RS Courses, Tourism, and Bhumisahayak. Led by a team comprising one assistant professor, three SACT, and one lab attendant, the department prides itself on its dedicated faculty and commitment to providing students with a stimulating learning environment. Despite its modest faculty size, the department has achieved significant milestones, including completing a 7-day national-level workshop, and a National Level seminar sponsored by ICSSR & NABARD showcasing its commitment to continuous learning and knowledge dissemination.

The department also serves as a nodal center for the IIRS Outreach Programme, facilitating remote sensing and GIS training. Students participate in internships such as medicinal seedling nursery programs, while regular seminars, workshops, class tests, local field visits, and excursions are organized to enrich their academic and practical knowledge further.

IIRS Outreach Programme (Online GIS/RS Courses)

From September 2018 to December 2021, the Department of Geography, Dinhata College, served as a Nodal Centre for IIRS Dehradun’s Outreach Programs, sponsored by ISRO. Offering courses on Remote Sensing (RS), GIS, and related fields, 351 participants gained expertise in areas like disaster management, biodiversity conservation, and agricultural water management, enhancing geospatial technology applications for addressing modern challenges.

SEC, Bhumisahayak (Aminship)

The SEC Bhumisahayak (Aminship) program equips students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in land surveying, records management, and cadastral mapping. They will master modern tools like Total Stations, GPS, and GIS software for precise land measurement. The program covers land laws, property rights, and tenure systems, emphasizing accuracy in land documentation. Graduates will excel in maintaining detailed land records, cadastral maps, and interpreting topographical data and satellite imagery for effective land management, ensuring transparency in land administration and resolving legal disputes related to property.

SEC Tourism

The Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) in Tourism provides a comprehensive understanding of the tourism industry, focusing on its economic, cultural, and environmental impacts. Students will gain practical skills in tourism planning, management, and marketing, with an emphasis on sustainable practices. Key areas include travel operations, destination management, and hospitality services. Graduates will be equipped to design tourism strategies that promote local development while minimizing environmental and cultural impacts, ensuring a balance between economic growth and conservation efforts.

Internship Course in Medicinal Seedling Nursery

The Internship Course in Medicinal Seedling Nursery offers hands-on experience in cultivating and managing medicinal plants. Students will gain practical skills in seed selection, propagation, transplantation, and nursery operations while learning about the botanical and therapeutic properties of various species. The program emphasizes best practices in soil preparation, irrigation, pest control, and organic farming. It also covers the commercial aspects, such as market analysis and business planning, equipping students to manage nurseries and contribute to the medicinal plant industry. Graduates will be prepared for roles in both public and private sectors as nursery managers and horticulturists.

Online Classes

The Department of Geography at Dinhata College has demonstrated a strong commitment to adapting to digital platforms, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, the department successfully conducted online classes through platforms such as Google Meet, Zoom, and the Viva YouTube channel, ensuring uninterrupted academic progress for students. The department’s innovative approach extended beyond the pandemic, as they continue to share important classes and lectures regularly through their official social media channels, including the Facebook page Geo Dinhata College and the YouTube channel Dr. Bappa Sarkar. These platforms serve as a valuable resource for students, allowing them to access academic content, revisit lectures, and engage with learning materials anytime. The department’s efforts reflect their dedication to enhancing learning experiences and making education accessible to a wider audience.

The Department of Geography at Dinhata College achieved notable success with Rahul Debnath securing 1st Class 1st in the 2021 1st Honours Batch. The department also initiated a weather station in collaboration with IMD and serves as a Nodal Centre for IIRS Dehradun, enhancing research and education opportunities.
