About The department

The department of English is one of the earliest departments established in Dinhata College. It came into being with the very inception of the College in 1956. Since then, it has been a vibrant academic unit dedicated to the study and exploration of the English language, literature, and culture. The department fosters an environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and effective communication. Through its comprehensive curriculum, students are exposed to the rich tapestry of English literature, from classic works to contemporary texts, and gain insights into the historical, social, and cultural contexts that shape literary production.

The teachers are dedicated to provide mentorship and guidance, helping students to develop their analytical and writing skills. To achieve an all-round development of the young learners, the department regularly organise student-centric seminars, film shows, workshops, lectures and so on in addition to regular classroom teaching. The outcome can be perceived in the number of students of this department progressing towards higher education and also in the alumni established in different sections of the society. Infrastructure Of This Department

The department is in possession of three well-equipped classrooms and projectors and laptop, sound systems, and a modest collection of books. There are three substantive teachers and two State Aided Contractual Teachers. There are sufficient number of chairs, tables and benches and sufficient number of lights and fans in the classrooms.

Departmental Highlights

The department of English boasts of a very healthy and cordial relationship between the teachers and the students, extending outside the classroom as well. The department has been regular contributor of students holding ranks in the university examinations. There is a cultural atmosphere as the students regularly hold cultural programmes on different occasions within the department and participate in the cultural programmes organised by the college. There is a particular interest in performative arts, esp. drama. There have been workshops on drama for the students, organised by the department.
