About The department

Bengali as a subject came into being right at the inception of Dinhata College in 1956 in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, India. The College initially affiliated with the University of Calcutta until 1962, later the college became affiliated with the University of North Bengal. Honours Course in the Department was introduced in 1981.
Studies in Bengali Language and Literature in consonance with the syllabi of the University of North Bengal are imparted in three analogous sub-streams –

Academic Calender

Bengali Honours, Elective Bengali and Compulsory Bengali under 2+1 and after that 1+1+1 system. Compulsory Bengali is mandatory for students across all streams—Science, Arts, and Commerce. In the 30th July, 2015 the college became affiliated to the Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University. The Department of Bengali starts teaching according to Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from the academic session 2017-2018, along with the skill development courses. From the academic sessions 2023-2024 the University introduced a 4-year Multidisciplinary National Curriculum and Credit Framework (NCCF) Undergraduate Programme with multiple entries and multiple exit provisions under the National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP-2020) and the Department has started teaching under this new framework accordingly.

Departmental Highlights

The Department of Bengali boasts of a very healthy and cordial relationship between the teachers and the students, extending outside the classroom as well. The department has been regular contributor of students holding ranks & get good results in the university examinations. Always the highest numbers of students go to the CBPBU and others University from Bengali Department of Dinhata College. There is a cultural atmosphere as the students regularly hold cultural programmes on different occasions within the department and participate in the cultural programmes organised by the college. There is a particular interest in performative arts, esp. Drama, Recitation, Debate & Extempore. There have been workshops on drama & Debate for the students, organised by the department.

Infrastructure Of The Department

The department is in possession of three well-equipped classrooms and projectors and laptop, sound systems, and a modest collection of books. There are four substantive teachers and two State Aided Contractual Teachers. There are sufficient number of chairs, tables and benches and sufficient number of lights and fans in the classrooms.
